A SPAM butty and a packet of crisps could be the vital clues which identify the unknown source of a plethora of garden gnomes mysteriously sent to the home of a Lancaster woman. During the last few weeks Linda Turner, of Ryelands Road, has become the adoptive mother of GNorman, GEric, GDoug, GCecil, GVictor and GPercy and has now named her house GLinda's Gnome Home! The gnomes arrived in a series of letters and parcels from as far afield as Hong Kong and Australia and the secret sender obviously knew that Linda enjoyed a Spam butty and a packet of crisps every night before bedtime.  more...

Jailed pair miss last chance

TWO prisoners fighting convictions for their part in robberies at Little Chef restaurants have been denied legal aid for a judicial review of their case. Robert McEwen and Eon Kennedy, both currently languishing in Risley Prison in Cheshire, were told this week that their application for financial assistance to argue their case had been turned down by the Legal Aid Board. The pair have been devastated by the news which comes on the end of a long line of disappointments for them.  more...

Search for cabbie after girl attacked

A TAXI driver could hold the vital clue to the brutal beating of a 21-year-old Lancaster woman. Susan Capstick, of West Street, is recovering in hospital with a broken jaw and severe facial injuries after being attacked at her home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Lancaster Police are appealing for the taxi driver, who was seen outside the victim's home at about 12.30am on Sunday morning, to come forward and help trace her movements that evening.  more...

STAFF at Sainsbury's could end up delivering more than the weekly groceries following the introduction of a new scheme to help mums-to-be! For the company is to offer a wide range of services for pregnant women and have even pledged to give a full year's supply of nappies to any mum whose waters break while they are in the store - or even on the car park. Now they are seeking urgent talks with the police, environmental health officials and drug advisors to try and thrash out a plan of action to deal with what they say is an increasing problem.
