Safety first blitz

ROAD safety at accident blackspots in Blackburn and Hyndburn are to be improved as part of the county council's small improvements programme. More than £160,000 will be spent on six local traffic calming schemes and work will begin in the next couple of months.

A scheme on the Roman Road estate in Blackburn will receive the biggest funding with £50,000 to be spent on improving child pedestrian safety in the area.

Traffic calming measures will include road humps and a 20mph zone which will complement measures recently carried out.

A similar scheme will be implemented in the Brookhouse area.

Also in Blackburn, £28,000 has been earmarked for the third phase of a scheme at Audley Range between Lambeth Street and Cherry Street.

The programme will include footway build outs and a mini roundabout at the junction of North Road with the aim of redicing vehicle speeds.

At Lee Lane in Rishton, special consideration has been given to cyclists with plans to introduce a cycle lane to improve road safety for all road users.

At Plantation Street and Sandy Lane in Accrington, £26,000 is to be spent to improve road safety in the area, in a joint venture between Lancashire Council and Hyndburn Council.

Another jointly-funded scheme between the two councils will slow traffic approaching Oswaldtwistle from the Duckworth Hill area.
