Don't lecture parents

SIR: Your headline 'Parents turn kids truant for cheap hols' (BEN June 25) suggests that parents are keeping their children away from school illegally. In fact, children may be absent from school for up to 10 days in each academic year for certain purposes; one of which is an annual family holiday, subject to permission from the school. If the education authority does not like this, perhaps it should try to persuade Mr Blunkett to change the law.  more...

Lung cancer figures rise

SIR: I have followed with interest the views and arguments expressed by Mr Alker and Mr Collinson about the proposed industrial estate and road at Kearsley. I would like to give my opinion on the subject. Firstly, when the Industrial Revolution started, the face of the country where we live was changed for the worse. After the 1939-1945 War, the then government brought in the Clean Air Act. Since then, due to the decline of the mills, engineering, and the closure of the coal mines, conditions should have improved. But since 1946, the records of lung cancer have shown an increase every year. This directly matches the increase in the number of cars and trucks during the same period. Therefore, to build an industrial estate in the middle of a housing estate and more roads which will mean more cars and trucks. I therefore must question Mr Alker's motives in his support of the proposed estate and road.  more...

Ministry made this problem

SIR: The HGV traffic problem on Pilkington Road and Springfield Road, Kearsley arose when the Ministry of Transport built the M61 and A666 spur in the late 1960s. This isolated land, designated industrial, became the Lyon Industrial Estate. The only way to it was through a housing estate, or over a railway bridge built across the M61 and out to a main road through an industrial estate.  more...

Heartbreaking decision

SIR: I am also disgusted at the decision of the judge who condemned the little dog Zack to death, even when the young boy the dog accidentally bit pleaded for his life. Please think again.  more...
