Cheers for the millennium

MOST pubs in the area will be staying open for New Year's Eve according to chairman of the Lancaster Victuallers' Association Jack Lennon. The pub licensee's trade paper, The Publican, published a national survey which stated that most pubs will not be able to pay the wages of staff on the big night. But Mr Lennon commented: "I know that big chains like Yates' are talking about closing but the average tenant and licensee will find a way, I'm sure. The problem is going to be in big cities not places like Lancaster and Morecambe." That said, the wages and the booking prices for the night are very high. I've thought of little else for a long time and I know I'm not alone."  more...

Horns of a dilemma

IT WOULD appear that we have a band of vigilantes living in the Slyne Road area of Skerton who have nothing better to do that watch dog walkers and monitor their every step. I refer in particular to the two vehicles driving along Slyne Road at approximately 2 o'clock on Saturday August 14 and other individuals who live in the area who had the audacity to blow their horns to inform me that my dog was in the process of relieving himself. As a mature, responsible adult I am well aware of the bodily functions of my dog and carry the appropriate equipment with which to clean up. However, I find it exceedingly difficult to perform this task until the offensive material has physically departed from said animal! In addition to this, on the odd occasion when the offensive material has not been removed immediately, I am appalled by the disgusting abuse that comes out of the mouths of these people. May I suggest that in future, these people clean up their manner in the same way I clean up after my dog. If these vigilantes genuinely felt so strongly about this matter, then instead of wasting their time harassing innocent individuals, they would do better constructively petitioning Lancaster City Council into providing the appropriate dog litter bins etc. Also, I wonder, are these individuals the same parents of the youngsters who frequently deposit litter, spit and swear in my area? I know which I prefer!  more...

Tony Hesketh's City views

A GREAT performance on Tuesday night but, let me assure you, none of us are getting too carried away here at City. We need another three or four players and I hope I will have another player on the books for you by this Saturday's home match against Frickley. I'm currently in talks with one player and the signs are good although, of course, you never know in football. In the meantime I'm very pleased with the players I have. Chris Ward who is just 18 was outstanding on Tuesday - he did things I've never seen him do and he gave it all he had. Mark Cheal was also worthy of mention for his performance. I took him off injured after 40 minutes but only as a precaution. It wasn't just those two though. The whole team were superb and I hope to put the same side out on again Saturday. We aim to entertain I notice our crowds are creeping up. If we show the same level of skill on Saturday I've no doubt our fans will be back for more.  more...

MOTORCYCLE racer Karl Moss from Dolphinholme arrived on the Isle of Man this week for the Manx Grand Prix and proceeded to blow away his previous best lap of 105 mph average with a blistering time of 110.40 mph average on what is basically a stock Suzuki GSXR 750. Last year Karl went to the Island in the newcomers class and away with fourth place against stiff opposition. But this year he is competing in the senior class and is yet again up at the pointed end of proceedings. When asked why the sudden improvement he replied the softer tyres and a better understanding of the intricacies of the 37 mile road circuit made all the difference.  more...
