Island refuges are welcome

REGARDING your article 'Haulage boss slams traffic scheme' (LET, August 18), I get fed up of motorists moaning and groaning about humps, bumps and what have you on our roads.

I would like to have my say as a humble pedestrian.

I cross the top of Blackburn Road in Clayton-le-Moors twice a day, going to and from work and over the last few months, while the road was being widened, it was harder to cross because there was no proper footpath. But now that there are two islands, it is a lot easier and safer to cross.

Before they were made, it was a very wide road to cross and I was forever having to watch the traffic lights for them changing when I was only halfway across.

I agree with the county council spokesman - the scheme does strike a balance between the motorist and pedestrian and if haulier Mr Bob Baron can't see it that way, then I suggest he drives his lorries on the other road out of Great Harwood.

To say there is only one road that will take him to the M65 is eyewash.
