City players fined for disorderly manner

From the Evening News, November 10, 1903: SAM Frost, George Livingstone and John M'Mahon, three members of the Manchester City football team, were each fined five shillings and costs at the Manchester City Police Court this morning for behaving in a disorderly manner in Oxford Road last night.

The evidence of police constables was to the effect that defendants were shouting and jostling passers-by. Frost explained to the Magistrates that it was "only a bit of fun." The Chairman, Mr W. J. Crossley, pointed out that it was at the expense of the public.

MRS Halliday died suddenly a few days ago at Niagara Falls. An autopsy brought to light the fact that two corset steels, each nine inches in length, had been embedded in her body for some years.

Princess Margaret to reopen Royal Exchange

From the Evening News, November 10, 1953: OFFICIALS and employees of John Dickinson and Co, Bolton, the principal contractors for the reconstruction of the Manchester Royal Exchange, will be among those presented to Princess Margaret next Tuesday when she travels to Manchester to reopen the building. The architects for the reconstruction are the Bolton firm of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope.

MR Anthony Head, Secretary for War, said in the Commons this afternoon that the total number of enrolled and registered men in the Home Guard now amounts to 58,500.

If atomic war should come Home Guard support to our Civil Defence services is likely to be of vital importance.

Mortgage interest rate to shocking 11.75pc

From the Evening News, November 10, 1978: THE mortgage rate took its biggest ever jump today up by two per cent to 11.75 per cent. The grim news for houseowners was announced by the Building Societies' Association.

BOLTON Wanderers have asked Manchester United to switch the date of the clubs' game at Burnden Park from Dec 23 to Dec 21. Club Secretary Des McBain said: "There was no extra pressure brought to bear on us, but we know that people are concerned about problems which could be caused by the game being played on the last shopping day before Christmas."

Manchester bids for Games

From the Evening News, November 10, 1993: MANCHESTER is poised to wipe away the disappointment of failing to land the Olympics by bidding to stage the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Bob Scott, chairman of the Olympic Bid Committee, said today: "I am convinced that Manchester must continue to think big."

CASH-starved Bolton Council will today give away almost £1 million and town hall bosses can do nothing about it.

Councillors were due to approve the formal transfer of council-owned land to opted-out Canon Slade School, Bradshaw. The site has been valued at between £800,000 and £1 million.
