THEY run up ladders and slide down poles every day - so for a group of firemen, taking part in a fund-raising challenge in Bolton town centre was something of a busman's holiday.
A group of firefighters from across Greater Manchester were joined by volunteers from the Anthony Walker Foundation to complete a charity ladder climb.
The event took place in Victoria Square to raise money for two good causes: the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and the Anthony Walker Foundation, which was established in memory of the Liverpool axe murder victim.
Bolton Central crew manager Steve Jordan went on a course where he met Dominique, the sister of the murdered teenager.
After talking to her, he was determined they could work together to raise money.
"Dominique is using what happened to her and her family in a positive way, to educate young people about unity and respect for each other," said Mr Jordan.
"In organising the ladder climb, I wanted to provide some much needed funds to launch the charity." Dominique, aged 21, a student at Liverpool John Moores University, also took part in the event. She said: "We are hoping to start a youth advocacy programme involving schools to raise awareness. The event was fun. I have never worn a firefighter's uniform or done anything like this before."
