Anderson set for loan move to Glamorgan

From the archive, first published Monday 11th Sep 2006.

James Anderson could be set to make his long awaited return to county cricket next week in preparation for England's hectic winter.

The Lancashire pace ace has not played a competitive game since England's one-day tour of India back in April due to a stress fracture of the back.

But now England coach Duncan Fletcher wants the Burnley-born 24- year-old back in action to assess his fitness with one eye on November's Ashes trip to Australia - but not with Lancashire.

Fletcher has been in touch with Lancs about the possibility of exploiting the county loan system to get Anderson back on the pitch for the final round of four-day fixtures next week.

The county involved is rumoured to be Glamorgan who have nothing to play for at the foot of Division Two.

With the England coach's past associations with the Sophia Gardens club as coach, they seem the most likely option.

If Anderson does go on loan to the Welsh capital, he is highly unlikely to play in the Pro40 League game against Lancashire at Old Trafford this coming Sunday.

His home county will not agree to that because they are still fighting against relegation.

The reason a loan has been mooted is that Mike Watkinson, Lancashire's manager, is wary of playing Anderson in their final game at Hampshire when it could be a title decider.

That possibility has not yet been ruled out, but it would take a glut of injuries, or a massive gamble, for Anderson to play at the Rose Bowl.

Lancashire's hopes of securing their Pro40 League Division One status were given a boost on Saturday thanks to an easy eight-wicket win over the Warwickshire Bears.

Dominic Cork's 3-24 restricted the visitors to 208-7 before Nathan Astle (71) and Mark Chilton (67) shared an unbeaten third-wicket partnership of 122 to complete the win - their first of the campaign.

Chilton said: "I thought we played really well. We came out of the blocks really quickly, the young lads in the field cut off the singles and it was really nice to knock them off with two down."
