Town is still home for Aussie Roland

From the The Bolton News, first published Saturday 25th Aug 2007.

HE may have lived in Australia for 50 years, but for Bolton-born Roland Beech, home is where the heart is.

The engineer moved Down Under in 1957 when he was recruited to be an engineer. But he still keeps in touch with the news back home - by reading clips from The Bolton News sent to him by friends.

Mr Beech, and his wife, Peggy, moved from Heaton to Sydney in 1957.

After he was recruited to work on a hydro-electric project in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Mr and Mrs Beech boarded a ship for a new life in Australia.

But Mr Beech, who has returned to Bolton seven times, could never forget his roots.

He said: "My education at the then Bolton Municipal Secondary School was the foundation of my progression to becoming an engineer."

After spending nearly five years in the Snowy Mountains Mr and Mrs Beech and their two daughters moved to Papua New Guinea.

They returned to Perth in Australia, where they now live.

Mr Beech said: "Our friends keep us informed about what is happening in Bolton by sending regular clippings from The Bolton News."
