Disabled man trapped in crash
From the The Bolton News, first published Saturday 25th Aug 2007.
A WHEELCHAIR-bound man was trapped in the van he was travelling in after it was involved in a collision with a taxi.
The 47-year-old man, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was freed by firefighters after the vehicle was flipped onto its side at the junction of Plodder Lane and Bradford Road, Farnworth, at 11.30am.
The man, who was in shock, suffered a bump on the head and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital by ambulance for a check up.
Two fire engines from Farnworth were on their way to another call, which turned out to be a false alarm, when they came across the crash.
One pump stopped at the scene and firefighters and manager to get the man, who was still in his wheelchair, out of the back doors.
Bill Edwards, Watch Manager at Farnworth fire station said: "We were on our way to another call when we came across this accident so one engine stopped and helped the disabled man out.
"He suffered a slight bump to the head when the vehicle overturned and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.
"It happened at the traffic lights of a busy junction and the car blocked the road which caused traffic problems for a short time."
The taxi driver and driver of the van were both uninjured.
