Old girl’s new guide to Spain

From the Bury Times, first published Saturday 25th Aug 2007.

FORMER Prestwich resident Valerie Collins has co-written a book which is sure to set your travel tastebuds tingling.

In the Garlic, a literal translation from the Spanish phrase "en el ajo" which means "in the know", is an informative and fun A-Z guide to living in Spain.

Valerie, who attended Bury Grammar School, and co-writer Theresa O'Shea take the confusions of living abroad and make them clear with heaps of information and a good sense of humour.

Valerie (56), who was born and raised in Prestwich, and whose mother still lives in Whitefield, moved to Barcelona in 1973 where until recently she worked as a translator, editor and writer.

She said: "Interestingly, when I was at Bury Grammar, there was no Spanish on the cirriculum at all. Now it has a thriving Spanish department."

"Spain has incredible diversity - so learn some Spanish, explore with an open mind, and enjoy."

Her book is available in UK bookstores or via Amazon.
