Anger at hoax call youngsters

From the The Bolton News, first published Monday 27th Aug 2007.

FIREFIGHTERS have blasted youngsters who made a hoax call, claiming the prank could have cost lives.

Crews from Leigh were called to reports of a fire in Maple Avenue at 6pm yesterday.

But when they arrived the house number did not exist.

Watch manager Paul Sharples said: "If there had been a genuine house fire, then crews could have been delayed getting to it because they had been sent on this hoax call and it could have easily resulted in a fatality.

"I would appeal to youngsters to never contact the fire brigade with a hoax call because it is completely irresponsible."

Crews in Leigh had earlier been called to an incident involving an pile of rubbish in a skip.

Arsonists struck in a back alley behind Milton Street at 12.40am.

Police have been informed about both incidents.

  • In separate incidents, a rubbish fire caused damage to a garage door in Sadler Street, Great Lever. Fire crews were called at 4.40pm yesterday.

It is believed the fire was started deliberately.

Arsonists also struck on land behind the Bridgewater pub in Buckley Lane, Farnworth, at 7pm yesterday, when a shed was destroyed by fire.
