Man drowned in fishing accident

From the Blackpool Citizen, first published Monday 27th Aug 2007.

A Polish man from Blackpool has died after drowning in the River Ribble near Preston while fishing.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, got into difficulties at around 11pm last night after he and a male friend were fishing behind the Continental pub in Riverside Road, Penwortham.

It is believed that the pair waded into the centre of the river and got caught in rising water levels.

Firefighters from Preston and Penwortham launched water rescue equipment and spent three hours searching for the man alongside the Lytham inshore lifeboat.

His body was eventually recovered from the bottom of the river by firefighters at around 2am this morning.

The second man, who had jumped into the river to try and find him, managed to get back onto the riverbank and was treated at the scene for exposure by paramedics.
