Cyclists to Ride the Lights
From the Blackpool Citizen, first published Monday 27th Aug 2007.
Thousands of cyclists will be pedalling along Blackpool's seafront tomorrow night to enjoy a sneak pre-view of the town's Illuminations.
For one night only, Blackpool Council is giving residents and visitors a unique chance of a leisurely cycle through the six-mile extravaganza along a traffic-free seafront.
The free Ride the Lights event is open to everyone and takes place between 8pm and 10pm.
It will mean the Promenade will be closed to traffic from Starr Gate, near Squires Gate Lane, all the way to Red Bank Road, Bispham.
Cyclists will be able to take in family favourites from the world's largest Mirrorball at South Shore to the tableaux at North Shore.
But certain sections of the lights will not in operation for this special preview.
Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Robert Wynne, will be outside the Sandcastle at 8pm before he rides through the lights ahead of the official switch-on on Friday.
It is the second time the resort has hosted the Ride the LIghts event. Last year the Promenade was packed with more than 2,000 cyclists from across the region.
