Ramsbottom Ramblings

My wife Jenny and I have decided to believe that the rotten weather we've suffered over the last couple of months is finally behind us. The alternative to not believing that better weather is on its way, is to enrol on some council run joinery course concerned with ark building- that's what Noah would have donebut Jenny and I are optimists. Of one thing we are certain, at the first sign of some heat in the sun, there's no doubt the British media will remind us that too much sun is harmful to the skin and one of the main causes of skin cancer. That's Britain and the British media for you, always cancelling out good news with a bit of bad. But this column will try its utmost to correct that problem. We've decided to tip the good/bad news scale all the way over to good, and try to keep it there. Unfortunately, Jenny and I can do nothing about the standpipes that might appear on our streets if the good weather extends beyond a couple of weeks We live in the small stone built mill town of Ramsbottom, the place some people believe was named after the rear end of a tup. That might have been true when the rain was lashing it down last week, but not anymore. I'm writing this piece on a warm August 1st Wednesday evening after a long sunny day, and right now Rammys a great place to be. Of course the town's got its social problems, but what town hasn't. Never forget, it could be worse, we could have a Labour Government.  more...

Treatment of animals is so hard-hearted

THE sad case of Shambo, the bull slaughtered because he failed a bovine TB reactor test, reveals the callous nature of animal farming. Around 170,000 calves die in their first month of life and at least 250,000 adult cattle die or are killed annually because of conditions associated with neglect, filth and intensification. These include mastitis, diarrhoea, infertility and lameness. Those animals who do remain healthy are killed at a fraction of their natural lifespan.   more...
