Knife was thrown away
From the Lancashire Telegraph, first published Friday 3rd Aug 2007.
POLICE called to a report of a disturbance saw a 22-year-old man throw a knife to the ground as they approached.
Blackburn magistrates heard that Richard Graham Hawley later admitted to police that he had armed himself with the weapon and chased after another man who had assaulted him.
Hawley, of New Wellington Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
Isla Chilton, prosecuting, said Hawley claimed the other man had punched him several times before he grabbed the knife from the kitchen and went after him.
"His is a very serious offence," said Mrs Chilton. "You only have to look at what happens when people use knives."
Clare Knight, defending, denied that Hawley had gone charging round the streets looking for the other man.
"He accepts that he picked up the knife after he had been assaulted," said Miss Knight. "He was walking home when the police saw him."
